THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 LOCKDOWN FORCE MAJEURE ON BUILDING CONTRACTORS

On 10 June 2020l, the MBAWC hosted a successful webinar using ZOOM covering the extremely topical issue of Force Majeure as it pertains to COVID-19 for building contractors.

The event was attended by close to 200 individuals across the industry.

The speakers who participated in the event were:

Professor Tinus Maritz

Prof Tinus Maritz is a Registered Professional Quantity Surveyor. He has vast experience in practice and academia, specialising in the field of construction law during the latter part of his career. As the acting CEO of the Joint Building Construction Committee (JBCC), a body which he has served on for many years, he brings a wealth of experience to the panel as an authority on the JBCC suite of contracts. 

Brad Boertje

Brad holds a B.Sc. in Quantity Surveying and is a fellow of the South African Association of Arbitrators. Brad spent 25 years working primarily with main contractors, and for 10 years held the position of Managing Director of the Building business unit at one of South Africa’s largest privately-owned construction groups. Brad is a commercial specialist, adjudicator, and arbitrator.

Advocate Pieter Griessel

Pieter Griessel is a well-renowned Construction Advocate with over 20 years' experience in corporate labour relations management, employment law and legal risk management. Providing advice on all employment-related matter, ongoing strategic-and risk assessments.

They were joined by 3 panelists, namely:

  • Rick Volker (Senior Vice President of MBAWC & Divisional MD of Grinaker-LTA Cape Town)
